Love Is All 2001 Reviews
Here is a selection of comments from the Burton Mail about the
first Love Is All show in 2001 ...
Tony produces a night to remember ...
Review by Dave Stacey
GREAT music of 30 or more years ago had Burton Town Hall
throbbing on Saturday night when one-time rocker Tony Mulcahy
sang the songs of his friend and idol Engelbert Humperdinck.
In two one-hour stints he gave us early favourites like Please
Release Me and brought us up to date with last year's chart
hit How to Win Your Love.
Tony's magnificent tour de force raised more than £2,700
for the Burton Cancer Patients Fund - on top of the £48,500
he had already raised for the same cause in the past 10 years.
Thus he soared past the £50,000 target he had aimed for.
In the audience was Engelbert's sister, Celene Ayton, who came
over from Leicester for the show. Mrs Ayton told me she
was delighted with the quality of Tony's tribute to her brother,
and his persistence in raising money for a good cause. She
was proud that her brother also gave shows for charity - in
a recent instance for hard of hearing children.
The audience cheered and applauded thunderously as Tony sang
the songs of the man he calls the Master of Romance. Tony proved
himself to be not only a terrific singer but a superb showman.
His performance of There goes My Everything, Can't
Take My Eyes Off You and A Man Without Love were
outstanding. There was one maverick in his otherwise all-Engelbert
selection - The Rose. Tony confessed that his hero
had not recorded it - "but he might have sung it on stage."
Big hits like The Last Waltz and Spanish Eyes
made the second half of the show even more exciting than the
first. Tony finished with Love Is All, which he had made
the title of his show, but the audience stayed put to revel
in a reprise of Release Me by Tony's backing group, The
Cover Girls.
The group, comprising five glamorous members of Burton Operatic
Society, not only backed Tony but sang a couple of rocking updates
of wartime favourites on their own account - hits in their day
for the Andrews Sisters and the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
An orchestra conducted by David Blackwell worked from arrangements
by John Morton which accurately reproduced the sound and feel
of the Engelbert records. Andy Potter compered.
Entertainer should be recognised across the country ...
OUR local man has done it again!
Love Is All, a tribute to Engelbert Humperdinck, was shown
at the Burton Town Hall on Saturday, June 16, organised by Tony
Mulcahy in aid of Burton Cancer Patients.
It was another breathtakingly and successful show performed
by our local master of entertainments. Completely amazing from
start to finish and was worth every minute of it. What a spectacular
show! I just cannot say enough about it.
The combination of Tony, the backing singers "The Cover
Girls" and the "Love Is All" orchestra, complimented
the show and did him proud.
I watched the show with a colleague of mine from the Burton
College and we were both delighted by the wonderful comments
the audience made throughout the show, we were all mesmerised,
and at the end Tony received a standing ovation. Engelbert
would have been proud to be there.
I would be interested to know if Tony received any support from
his favourite charity "Burton Cancer Patients" for
his continuous commitment, raising over £50,000?
I would like to suggest that the Burton Mail, the Mayor
of Burton or the Burton Hospital nominate Tony for an OBE for
his devotion towards raising funds for Burton Cancer Patients.
"It's never too late and is better late than never."
This outstanding Burton entertainer is truly a professional
and should be recognised not only in his hometown, but throughout
the country as well.

Great Evening ...
Last Saturday I attended at Burton Town, Love Is All - A
Tribute to Engelbert Humperdinck starring local entertainer
Tony Mulcahy and I am writing to say how much I enjoyed the
evening.
The sheer professionalism of the event was amazing.
Tony singing all Engelbert's favourite songs supported by the
Cover Girls who were excellent and a brilliant orchestra. The
event was well compered too.
To see over 300 people give a standing ovation at the end of
the night showed what a super concert it was and to make the
night complete a great deal of money was raised for Tony's cancer
Charity.
Can I thank everyone who helped make the night so successful.

Your Tony is a star! ...
I WISH to point out to the good people of Burton that you
have amongst you a star - Tony Mulcahy.
Last Saturday my wife and I travelled along the A38 from Derby
to Burton Town Hall to experience a memorable evening.
Tony Mulcahy sang the songs of Engelbert Humperdinck accompanied
by a first class orchestra, and superb backing singers, 'The
Cover Girls'.
I've seen many shows -- this one was brilliant and Tony deserved
the standing ovation he received.
Proceeds from the night went to Burton Cancer Patients and I
suggest the next time a Burtonian of the Year is chosen the
recipient is Tony Mulcahy -- Alan Grimadell, Allestree, Derby
Great concert...
I wanted to write and say how very much I enjoyed Tony Mulcahy's
concert at Burton.
I travelled with some of my members to catch his tribute concert
to Engelbert and we all had a marvellous time. Tony's choice
of songs and performance on the night were warmly received by
the crowd there.
Being president of Engelbert's fan club and an avid fan, I thought
it would be strange watching someone else perform the "master's"
songs, but Tony captured them so well and the concert was put
together with great perfection, he really did Engelbert proud.
